About

Wisdom teeth can cause a lot of trouble. They hurt when they grow, and can cut your tongue and cheeks if they come out the wrong way. They tend to accumulate harmful bacteria, which can lead to tooth decay. The other teeth can suffer from such a “neighbor,” and in the end, it will all lead to the fact that it will have to be removed.

When should a wisdom tooth be removed?

It is not necessary to remove third molars, but there are situations when it is simply necessary to do so. The main cases when this needs to be done are:

  • there is inflammation, pain, and swelling at the site of its implantation. There is pressure on the adjacent teeth;
  • there is a displacement of the dentition, malocclusion, and caries appears between the teeth;
  • cysts and abscesses form;
  • if preparation for the installation of braces is underway.

In order for wisdom tooth removal to be successful, you first need to undergo a diagnosis. This procedure will help to correctly distribute the stages of solving the problem, from an X-ray to complete healing.

When is it not necessary to extract?

If you are already worried about having to have your wisdom teeth removed, we are here to reassure you. It is not necessary to do so if:

  • there is no interference with neighboring teeth
  • there is no caries or inflammation
  • the tooth has fully erupted
  • it is easy to clean

In this case, you can leave them under the supervision of a dentist. The surgeons at the Roccadent clinic have extensive experience, so you can completely rely on them! Wisdom teeth can be extracted safely and without unnecessary anxiety under sedation.

Stages of wisdom tooth removal

Let’s take a look at the main stages of a full treatment:

  1. You make an appointment for a diagnosis at our clinic and come at the appointed time and date.
  2. The surgeon takes a full X-ray of the jaws and assesses the condition of the teeth and their roots. At this stage, a decision is made: to remove or leave.
  3. If the doctor prescribes removal, local anesthesia (an injection into the gum) is used. For those who are very anxious, the procedure can be performed under sedation.
  4. In mild cases, the surgeon rocks the tooth with an elevator and removes it with forceps. In severe cases (if it is impacted/broken), the gum is cut and the tooth is extracted in pieces. The remaining fragments are removed and treated with an antiseptic. Stitches are applied.
  5. Recommendations are given for a quick recovery. Painkillers or antibiotics are prescribed.

The duration of the procedure varies from 15 minutes to an hour. Sometimes it is necessary to visit the doctor again if complications arise or the stitches need to be removed.

FAQ

Initial healing takes 7 to 10 days. Complete tissue healing takes a little longer – 3 to 6 months.

It is advisable not to drink alcohol for two days after the procedure (48 hours). It can slow down healing and cause bleeding.

We recommend undergoing the procedure during the second trimester. Try to avoid removal closer to childbirth and during the first trimester. Our doctors select the most gentle anesthesia, agreed upon with your gynecologist.

When anesthesia is used, the procedure is painless. You may feel pressure during the procedure. After removal, the socket may cause discomfort and pain, but this can be remedied with painkillers.
