This problem affects every second patient, and if you’re one of them, we recommend treating tooth decay now at Rocca Dent—because the sooner, the better.
What is tooth decay?
Tooth decay, or dental caries, is a process in which the hard tissues of the tooth (enamel and dentin) are destroyed by bacteria. In its early stages, it appears as white spots on the enamel. If left untreated, it can progress deeper into the tooth, creating “holes” and damaging its structure. In advanced stages, bacteria can reach the pulp chamber, increasing the risk of inflammation and pulpitis.
Why does it occur?
Tooth decay often occurs due to a combination of factors, including:
- Plaque buildup. Forget to brush your teeth after meals? Bacteria won’t wait—they build up in the mouth and feed on food residue, particularly sugars. This forms plaque that clings firmly to the enamel.
- Improper diet. If you love sweets or consume many carbohydrate-rich and acidic foods, you’re creating a perfect environment for bacteria to thrive.
- Poor oral hygiene. Irregular or insufficient brushing allows plaque to accumulate, creating ideal conditions for decay to develop.
- Reduced salivary secretion. Saliva protects teeth by washing away bacteria and neutralizing acids. If saliva production decreases (e.g., due to medication), the risk of tooth decay increases.
The rate at which enamel breaks down depends on its thickness, so eat wisely and remember to floss or brush after every meal.

Superficial tooth decay
Without a professional exam, the early stages of tooth decay can go unnoticed. Common signs include:
- White, matte spots or discoloration on the enamel.
- Mild sensitivity to cold or sweet foods.
- No pain when pressing or chewing.
Deep tooth decay
Advanced tooth decay has more pronounced symptoms:
- Sharp or aching pain, often worsening at night.
- Increased sensitivity to hot, cold, sour, or sweet foods.
- Pain when pressing or chewing on the affected tooth.
- Possible bad breath.
Caries treatment at Rocca Dent
If you’re ready to address the issue, here’s how the treatment process works:
- Remineralization. In the early stages (white spot stage), special fluoride- and calcium-containing preparations are used to restore enamel and prevent further damage.
- Filling. For cavities, damaged tissues are removed, and the tooth is restored using a filling. Modern materials ensure a durable and discreet result.
- Root canal treatment. If decay has reached the pulp, more complex treatment is necessary, including nerve removal, canal cleaning, and filling to prevent infection from spreading.
