About

One of the most common problems many of our patients face is pulpitis—a highly unpleasant dental condition caused by inflammation within the pulp chamber.

What is pulpitis?

Simply put, pulpitis is the inflammation of the pulp chamber, also known as the “tooth nerve.” The pulp is a soft tissue that contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. These components provide sensitivity and nourishment to the tooth. In most cases, pulpitis is accompanied by sharp pain and is often a result of advanced tooth decay. That’s why dentists always recommend seeking treatment as soon as the first symptoms appear, to prevent it from turning into a bigger problem.

Causes

The primary cause of pulpitis, as mentioned earlier, is tooth decay, but other factors can also contribute:

  • Tooth injuries. Chips or cracks can allow bacteria to enter the pulp chamber.
  • Mechanical or chemical irritation. For example, sugary sodas, alcohol, and chocolate can harm the enamel. Sugar, in particular, destroys the outer enamel, which is why dentists strongly recommend brushing or rinsing your teeth after every meal.
  • Damage to the pulp during dental treatment.
  • Periodontitis. Inflammation of the tissues around the tooth can lead to a pulp infection.

If you’re experiencing tooth pain, don’t wait! Contact the specialists at Roccadent. Properly prescribed treatment can help you recover quickly and resolve the problem.

Symptoms

The symptoms of pulpitis indicate its stage and form. Key symptoms include:

  • Acute, constant, or periodic toothache.
  • Pain when consuming hot or cold drinks, as well as sugary foods.
  • Dull pain spreading to the jaw and ear, making it difficult to pinpoint which tooth hurts.
  • Increased sensitivity when chewing or pressing on the tooth.

In cases of chronic pulpitis, the symptoms may be less pronounced, but inflammation gradually leads to tissue destruction and further complications. Share your symptoms with your dentist so they can choose the most appropriate treatment method.

Treatment of pulpitis at Rocca Dent dentistry

Roccadent Dental Clinic offers several treatment options depending on the extent of pulp damage and the stage of inflammation:

  1. Conservative treatment. In the early stages, it may be possible to preserve the pulp.
    • The procedure begins with opening the tooth (by drilling a hole or removing an existing filling).
    • The next step is treating the area with an antiseptic and applying a special dressing made of calcium hydroxide or tricalcium phosphate.
  2. Nerve removal (pulp removal). If the inflammation has reached an irreversible stage, pulp removal is necessary.
    • Removal of the nerve under sedation.
    • Disinfection with agents like chlorhexidine or hypochlorite.
    • Filling the root canals to prevent reinfection.
